Step One: Check Crawlability

Then crawl the site with a dedicated crawler and look for broken internal links, long redirect chains, redirect loops, orphan pages with no internal links pointing to them, and pages buried more than three or four clicks from the homepage. Crawling and indexing are different things. In Search Console, work through the page indexing report and understand why each excluded group is excluded. Some exclusions are correct, such as redirected or canonicalised URLs, while others signal real problems: discovered but not indexed, crawled but not indexed, duplicate without a user-selected canonical, or blocked by noindex on a page that should rank.
Check that canonical tags are self-referencing on primary pages and consistent with internal links, sitemaps and redirects. Confirm noindex directives appear only where intended, and remember that a page blocked in robots.txt cannot have its noindex tag read. Look for thin, duplicated or auto-generated pages that dilute site quality, such as tag archives, filtered variations and near-identical location pages.
Step Three: Verify Rendering
If your site depends on JavaScript to display content, links or metadata, test how it renders without client-side execution. Compare the raw HTML source against the rendered document object model, and use the URL Inspection tool to view the rendered HTML that search engines see. Critical content and internal links should ideally be present in the initial HTML through server-side rendering or static generation. Links implemented as button click handlers rather than standard anchor elements with real URLs are frequently invisible to crawlers.
Step Four: Review Site Architecture and Internal Linking
A flat, logical structure spreads authority efficiently. Group content into clear categories and topic clusters, link hub pages to their supporting pages and back again, and use descriptive anchor text rather than generic phrases. Check that pagination is crawlable, that faceted navigation does not generate an unbounded number of indexable URLs, and that breadcrumbs are implemented both visually and in structured data.
Step Five: Measure Speed and Core Web Vitals
Use field data from the Core Web Vitals report for real user performance, and lab tools for diagnosis. Focus on the largest contentful paint, interaction to next paint and cumulative layout shift. Typical wins include compressing and correctly sizing images with modern formats, serving responsive images, deferring non-critical scripts, removing unused code, preloading key fonts with sensible fallbacks, reserving space for images and embeds to prevent layout shift, and enabling effective caching and a content delivery network. Mobile performance is the priority because mobile-first indexing means the mobile experience is what gets evaluated.
Step Six: Validate Structured Data and Metadata
Implement the schema types relevant to your business, such as organisation, local business, product, article, breadcrumb and frequently asked questions, and validate them with a rich results test. Ensure structured data reflects what is genuinely on the page. Separately, audit title tags and meta descriptions for duplicates, missing values and truncation, and confirm each page has exactly one clear H1 with a logical heading hierarchy beneath it.
Step Seven: Security, Hosting and International Signals
Confirm the whole site is served over HTTPS with no mixed content and that all variants of the domain redirect to a single canonical version. Check server response times and error rates, and make sure soft four hundred and four responses return the correct status codes. For multilingual or multi-regional sites, verify that hreflang annotations are reciprocal, use valid language and region codes, and include a self-reference plus a default fallback where appropriate.

A technical audit is a snapshot; websites change constantly.
