What Crawl Depth Actually Measures
Crawl depth is the number of clicks required to reach a page from your homepage following internal links. A page linked directly from the homepage has a depth of one. A page reachable only after clicking through a category, a subcategory, a paginated listing and then a product tile might have a depth of five or six.
Depth matters because search engines allocate finite resources to crawling any given site, and they prioritise pages that appear important. Importance is inferred substantially from internal linking: pages close to the homepage with many internal links pointing at them are treated as significant, while pages buried deep with a single inbound link are treated as marginal. Marginal pages get crawled infrequently, which means updates take longer to register, and they receive less internal authority, which means they rank worse.

Measuring Depth Across Your Site
You need a crawler that reports depth per URL. Run a full crawl from your homepage and export the results with the depth column, then build a distribution: how many pages sit at each depth level. A healthy site has most pages within three or four clicks, with a long tail no deeper than five.
If you find thousands of pages at depth six or beyond, you have a structural problem rather than a handful of exceptions. Cross-reference the deep pages against your Search Console data to see which of them get crawled at all, and against your commercial priorities to see whether anything valuable is stranded down there.
Also check for orphan pages, which have no internal links pointing at them at all. These are effectively invisible to crawlers navigating your site and typically only get discovered through your sitemap, which is a much weaker signal.
The Usual Causes
Deep pagination is the biggest culprit. If a category has forty pages of listings and each page links only to the next, the items on page forty sit at an enormous depth. Every item on those later pages is effectively stranded.
Excessive category nesting compounds it. Four or five levels of hierarchy before reaching actual content pushes everything deep by default. Many sites have nesting that reflects internal organisational thinking rather than how users or crawlers navigate.
Missing contextual links matter too. Sites where content pages link only through navigation, with no in-content links to related pages, force all discovery through the hierarchy. Faceted navigation generates enormous numbers of low-value URL combinations that consume crawl resources and push genuine pages further down the priority list.
Fix One: Flatten Pagination
Replace next-only pagination with a scheme that exposes more of the sequence: first pages, last pages, and a window around the current position. Better still, increase items per page so the total number of pages drops substantially, and add filtering that lets users reach specific items without traversing the sequence.
Consider whether deep pagination pages need indexing at all. Often the useful outcome is that the individual items are discoverable, not that page thirty of a listing ranks. Ensuring items are linked from elsewhere, such as related-item modules or curated hub pages, reduces reliance on pagination entirely.
Fix Two: Build Hub Pages
A hub page is a curated page that links to a coherent set of related deep pages, and it is the most effective single intervention available. It creates a shortcut from your main navigation directly to content that was previously buried, cutting depth by several levels at once.
Hubs work best when they are genuinely useful to readers rather than obvious link dumps. Organise them around a real user need: a buying guide linking to relevant products, a topic overview linking to detailed articles, a location page linking to local service pages. This way the hub earns its own traffic while redistributing authority.
Fix Three: Add Contextual Internal Links
In-content links carry more weight than boilerplate navigation links and are read as stronger relevance signals. Systematically add links from your strongest pages to your stranded ones, using descriptive anchor text that reflects what the target page is about.
Start from your most linked and most trafficked pages, because they have the most authority to distribute. A handful of contextual links from a strong page can move a deep page from irrelevance into contention faster than almost any other change.
Fix Four: Reduce Hierarchy Levels
Audit your category structure and collapse levels that exist for organisational tidiness rather than user need. If a subcategory contains three items, it probably should not be a separate level. Merging thin categories reduces depth for everything beneath them.
This is a bigger change requiring redirects and navigation updates, so plan it carefully and map old URLs to new ones. Done well, it improves both crawl efficiency and user experience, since shallower structures are easier to navigate.
Fix Five: Control Crawl Waste
Every URL a crawler spends time on is time not spent on your important pages. Block or canonicalise parameter variations, filtered combinations, session identifiers and internal search results that generate infinite URL spaces. Remove low-value archive and tag pages that exist only as byproducts of your content management system.
Check your server logs to see where crawl activity actually goes. It is common to discover that the majority of crawl requests hit URLs you never intended to be crawled, which explains why genuinely important pages are visited rarely.
Verifying the Improvement
Recrawl after implementing changes and compare the depth distribution against your baseline. You should see the mass of pages shift toward shallower levels and the orphan count drop to zero. Then watch crawl statistics in Search Console for increased crawl frequency, and monitor impressions on the previously stranded pages.
Expect a lag of several weeks before crawl behaviour and rankings reflect the new structure. Internal linking changes compound gradually as crawlers rediscover the site, so measure over a quarter rather than a fortnight.
