Redirects Are a Tool, Not a Penalty
There is a persistent belief that redirects harm search performance and should be avoided wherever possible. That is a misunderstanding. A redirect is simply an instruction telling browsers and crawlers that a resource now lives at a different address. Used correctly, redirects preserve the ranking value of old URLs, prevent broken user journeys, consolidate duplicate content, and make site restructuring safe. Sites that avoid redirects out of fear typically end up with far worse problems: dead links, lost authority, and error pages where valuable content used to be.
What does cause damage is careless implementation. Long redirect chains, loops, mismatched destinations, wrong status codes, and redirects layered on top of each other over years of neglect all degrade performance. The redirect itself is neutral; the execution determines the outcome.

Using 302s for permanent changes is one of the most common and costly mistakes we encounter.
A 308 is a permanent redirect that preserves the request method, and a 307 is its temporary equivalent. These matter mainly for form submissions and API behaviour. Meta refresh redirects and JavaScript-based redirects work in browsers but are slower, less reliable for crawlers, and should be avoided for anything important. Server-side redirects are always preferable.
What Actually Causes Harm
Redirect chains are the most frequent problem. When URL A redirects to B, which redirects to C, which redirects to D, every hop adds latency for users and consumes crawl resources. Crawlers may stop following after several hops, meaning the final destination never receives the signals it should. Every chain should be flattened so that the original URL points directly at the final destination.
Redirect loops, where two URLs point at each other, make content completely inaccessible. Redirecting large numbers of unrelated pages to the homepage is another serious error; search engines commonly treat these as soft 404s and discard the accumulated value, because the destination does not fulfil the original intent. Relevance matters: each redirect should lead to the closest equivalent content, not a generic catch-all.
Other damaging patterns include redirecting to URLs that are themselves noindexed or canonicalised elsewhere, leaving redirected URLs in your XML sitemap, keeping internal links pointing at redirected addresses instead of final ones, and accumulating thousands of rules that slow server response times.
Redirects During Site Migrations
Migrations are where redirect discipline matters most, and where most traffic losses originate. Start by crawling and exporting the complete inventory of existing URLs, including every page that receives organic traffic, has backlinks, or appears in your sitemap. Map each one to its closest equivalent on the new site. Where no equivalent exists, decide deliberately whether to redirect to a relevant parent category or return a proper 410 or 404, since redirecting genuinely removed content to unrelated pages helps nobody.
Implement the rules server-side, test them before launch on a staging environment, and verify a sample after launch with a crawler. Update internal links, canonical tags, sitemaps, and hreflang references to the new URLs rather than relying on redirects to resolve them. Then monitor crawl stats, index coverage, and rankings for at least several weeks. Expect some fluctuation; investigate anything that does not recover.
How Long to Keep Redirects Active
Keep permanent redirects in place indefinitely where practical. Search engines consolidate signals reasonably quickly, but external sites, bookmarks, emails, and old documents keep sending traffic to legacy URLs for years. Removing a redirect turns that residual traffic into error pages and severs any link equity still flowing through it. The storage and processing cost of maintaining a redirect is trivial compared with the value it preserves.
The exception is genuine cleanup: if a rule redirects a URL that no longer receives requests, has no backlinks, and appears nowhere externally, retiring it during a consolidation exercise is reasonable. Audit before deleting rather than pruning by assumption.
Keeping a Redirect Strategy Healthy
Treat redirects as managed infrastructure. Maintain a single documented source of truth for all rules rather than scattering them across plugins, server config, and application code. Audit periodically for chains, loops, and rules pointing at error pages. When you change a URL, add the redirect in the same deployment rather than afterwards. Ensure internal links always target current URLs so crawlers reach content in a single request. And use server-level redirects where possible for speed.
Clean redirect handling is also increasingly relevant as AI-driven systems crawl and cite content, since ambiguous or broken URL resolution reduces the likelihood of your pages being retrieved accurately. Structural clarity helps everywhere.
