Before You Install: Remove Conflicts And Take A Backup

Running two SEO plugins simultaneously is a reliable way to create duplicate meta tags, conflicting canonicals and contradictory sitemaps. If Yoast, All in One SEO or SEOPress is active, plan a migration rather than a coexistence. Rank Math includes importers for the major plugins, so the safest sequence is to install Rank Math, run the import, verify the data transferred, then deactivate and delete the previous plugin.

Take a full backup of files and database first, and if the site is live and earning revenue, do the work on staging. Confirm your environment meets the requirements as well: a currently supported WordPress version and a modern PHP release. Old PHP causes strange plugin behaviour that looks like a bug in Rank Math but is not.

Installing The Plugin

Choose the Advanced mode if you want visibility into every option, or Easy mode if you prefer sensible defaults you can revisit later. The wizard then asks how to categorise your site. Select the type that genuinely matches, because it determines the schema Rank Math generates. A consultancy is a business, not a personal blog, and choosing wrongly here produces misleading structured data.

Provide your business name and logo, keeping the logo at least one hundred and twelve pixels on its shortest side, and add a default social sharing image sized around twelve hundred by six hundred and thirty pixels. Next, connect Google Search Console and Analytics if you have them, since this surfaces your query and click data directly inside WordPress.

The sitemap step matters more than it appears. Enable the XML sitemap, then decide which post types and taxonomies belong in it. Posts and pages almost always do. Tag archives, author archives and media attachment pages usually do not, because they generate thin or duplicate URLs that dilute crawl budget. Finally, review the optimisation toggles: stripping category bases, noindexing empty archives and automatic image alt attributes are helpful, though the last one is no substitute for writing descriptive alt text yourself.

Enable Only The Modules You Need

Rank Math ships as a set of modules, and every active module adds work. Under Rank Math then Dashboard, enable the ones your site genuinely uses and disable the rest. Most sites want 404 Monitor, Redirections, Schema, Sitemap, Link Counter and Search Console. Local SEO belongs on sites with a physical presence or service area, WooCommerce SEO only on stores, and AMP only if you actually maintain AMP pages.

Leaving everything enabled is the most common cause of complaints that Rank Math slowed a site down. The plugin is not heavy by nature, but twelve active modules writing to the database on every save will be felt on modest hosting.

Set Titles, Meta And Indexing Rules Deliberately

Open the Titles and Meta section and configure templates per post type rather than editing every page by hand. A pattern such as the post title followed by a separator and the site name works for articles, while product and service pages often benefit from including a category or location variable. Set your homepage title around the primary term you want to rank for instead of leaving the site name alone.

Then handle indexing. Noindex tag archives if they duplicate category content, noindex author archives on single-author sites, noindex internal search results, and redirect attachment pages to the parent post. These decisions consolidate your crawl signals onto pages you actually want ranked. Confirm afterwards with a crawl or with Search Console coverage reports rather than assuming the toggles behaved as expected.

Schema, Redirections And Local Setup

Under Schema, set default types per post type: Article for blog posts, WebPage or Service for service pages, Product for shop items. Rank Math will then generate consistent structured data without manual work, and you can override individual pages when needed. Validate a few URLs with a rich results test to make sure nothing is missing required properties.

The Redirections module is a genuine advantage. Use it to fix broken URLs surfaced by the 404 Monitor and to preserve equity when you change slugs, always preferring a single permanent redirect over a chain. If you operate locally, complete the Local SEO settings with accurate name, address, phone number and opening hours so your LocalBusiness schema matches your business listings exactly.

Verify The Install, Then Move On To Strategy

Finish by checking the rendered output rather than the settings screens. View the source of a post and confirm one title tag, one meta description, one canonical and one set of structured data. Open your sitemap index and confirm it lists only the sections you intended. Submit that sitemap in Search Console and watch coverage for a week.
