How to Edit SEO on Squarespace
Squarespace builds beautiful websites. Its templates are polished, its editor is pleasant, and it removes almost all the technical friction of getting online. What it does not do is put your SEO controls in one obvious place. They are scattered across page settings, site-wide settings, individual blocks, and the built-in SEO panel, and the naming is not always intuitive. As a result, plenty of gorgeous Squarespace sites launch with duplicate titles, empty descriptions, auto-generated slugs, and untagged images. Fixing that does not require a developer, only knowing where to click and what to write.

We optimize Squarespace sites for clients across service businesses, ecommerce, hospitality, and professional practices. Our work covers the whole picture: keyword research mapped to your page structure, rewritten titles and descriptions, cleaned-up URL slugs with proper redirects, image and performance fixes, structured content that Squarespace templates tend to flatten, and the authority building that actually moves rankings. AAMAX.CO is a full-service digital marketing company offering web development, digital marketing, and SEO worldwide.
Set Your Site-Wide SEO Foundations
Open the main menu and go to Settings, then SEO. Here you define your site title and the SEO title format, which is the template Squarespace uses to build the title tag on every page. A common effective format places the page title first, then a separator, then the site title. Set a site description that summarizes the business in plain language with your primary keyword included naturally. While you are in Settings, confirm your site is not password protected and that Squarespace is not blocking search engines under the Crawlers or Site Availability options. Also make sure the site is on a paid plan with a connected custom domain, because a built-in trial URL will never build lasting authority.
Edit SEO on Individual Pages
Most of your work happens page by page. In Pages, hover a page, click the gear icon, and open its settings. The General tab controls the page title shown in navigation. The SEO tab is where the ranking signals live: the SEO Title overrides what appears in search results, and the SEO Description becomes your meta description. Write a unique title of about 55 characters for every page, leading with the phrase people search for. Write a unique description of roughly 150 characters that states the benefit and includes a reason to click. Leaving these blank forces Squarespace to guess, and its guesses are usually generic.
Fix URL Slugs Carefully
Still in page settings, the URL Slug field controls the address of the page. Squarespace often generates slugs from the original page name, so a page renamed from "Untitled" or "Services 2" may carry an unhelpful slug forever. Change slugs to short, lowercase, hyphenated keyword phrases. One critical caution: changing a slug on a page that already receives traffic will break existing links unless you create a redirect. Go to Settings, then Advanced, then URL Mappings, and add a 301 rule mapping the old path to the new one. Do this in the same session you rename anything, or you will lose the rankings you were trying to improve.
Optimize Headings Inside the Editor
Squarespace text blocks let you choose Heading 1 through Heading 4 and paragraph styles. Use Heading 1 exactly once per page for the main topic, then Heading 2 for major sections and Heading 3 for subsections. Many templates apply a Heading 1 style to the logo area or a banner, so check your live page source or use a browser inspector to confirm you do not have multiple H1 tags competing. Write headings as the questions and phrases your customers actually use, then answer them immediately in the paragraph below. This single habit improves both rankings and time on page.
Add Alt Text and Compress Images
Squarespace sites are image-heavy by design, which makes image SEO unusually important. Click any image block, open the edit panel, and add descriptive alt text in the designated field or via the image caption settings depending on your version. Describe what the image shows in a natural sentence. Before uploading, rename files descriptively rather than leaving camera output like IMG_4821.jpg, and resize them to no wider than roughly 2500 pixels. Squarespace generates responsive variants, but it cannot fix a 6 MB source file. Large background images are the leading cause of slow Squarespace pages and poor Core Web Vitals.
Optimize Blog Posts, Products, and Events
Collection items have their own SEO panels. For blog posts, open the post, go to the Options tab for the title, excerpt, thumbnail, categories and tags, then the SEO tab for the search title and description. Write real excerpts rather than letting Squarespace truncate your first paragraph, because excerpts often appear on listing pages and in feeds. For products, complete the description field with substantive copy rather than a single line, and use unique product URLs. Squarespace adds Product and Article structured data automatically when these fields are populated, so filling them in is how you unlock rich results.
Strengthen Internal Links and Navigation
Squarespace navigation is easy to configure and easy to overload. Keep your main navigation focused on the pages that matter commercially, and use footer links for secondary items. Inside your content, link generously from blog posts to service pages and between related posts using descriptive anchor text. Avoid deeply nested folder structures that bury important pages three clicks deep. When your internal linking mirrors your commercial priorities, authority accumulates where you want it. Aligning this with your broader digital marketing campaigns means every channel reinforces the same set of priority pages.
Connect Search Console and Analytics
Go to Settings, then Connected Accounts or the Analytics area, and connect Google Search Console. Squarespace generates a sitemap automatically at /sitemap.xml, so submit that once verified. Then monitor the Performance report for queries where you already rank on page two, since those are the fastest wins available. Squarespace Analytics gives you traffic sources and popular content, and you can add Google Analytics through the code injection or analytics settings if you need deeper reporting.
Work Around Squarespace's Limits
Some things Squarespace will not let you do easily. Custom structured data beyond its defaults requires code injection, available on Business plans and above. Server-level control, advanced caching, and granular script management are unavailable. Heavy use of galleries, parallax banners, and third-party embeds can degrade speed with no easy fix. Work within these boundaries by keeping pages lean and content strong. And as search increasingly surfaces AI-generated answers, structure your copy in clear question-and-answer form so it can be quoted; our GEO services are built for exactly that. Squarespace can rank very well when every available field is filled in thoughtfully rather than left at its default.
