Method One: Install Directly From Your WordPress Dashboard

Decide which content types should appear in search results: posts and pages almost always yes, while tag archives, date archives, author archives on single author sites and media attachment pages usually should not. Enable the XML sitemap and check that it loads, then submit its URL in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Review the breadcrumb settings, and if your theme supports them, enable breadcrumbs so both users and engines get clearer structure. Configure default schema types per post type so articles, pages and services are described correctly.

On each post you will see fields for a focus keyphrase, a search appearance preview and readability feedback. Use the preview to write a specific title and a persuasive description rather than accepting truncated defaults. Treat the green light indicators as a checklist prompt, not a target. Yoast measures patterns such as keyphrase presence and sentence length; it cannot judge whether your page is genuinely the most useful answer to a query. Chasing a perfect score by stuffing a phrase into every heading produces worse content and worse results. Aim for a clear, complete, well structured page and let the indicators fall where they fall.

Free Versus Premium

The free plugin covers everything most sites need: metadata control, canonicals, sitemaps, robots directives, schema and social previews. Premium adds multiple keyphrase tracking, internal linking suggestions, redirect management, orphaned content reports and related add-ons for local, news, video and e-commerce sites. The redirect manager alone can justify the cost for sites that change URLs frequently, but do not upgrade expecting a ranking boost. Both versions give you the same fundamental control.

Yoast makes correct technical output easy. It does not choose your keywords, write your content, earn your links, fix your site speed, improve your conversion rate or decide your strategy.
