How to Do Your Own SEO for Web Page
Optimising One Page at a Time
Site-wide SEO strategy can feel overwhelming, so the most effective way to start is to optimise a single page properly and then repeat the process. Working page by page gives you visible progress, teaches you the fundamentals through practice, and produces compounding results as each optimised page strengthens the ones it links to. This guide is deliberately a checklist. Pick your most important page, work through the steps in order, and you will have completed a genuine optimisation pass in an afternoon.
Choose your first page carefully. The best candidate is usually a page that already receives some impressions in your search console but ranks just outside the top positions, because it has proven relevance and only needs sharpening rather than building from nothing.
How AAMAX.CO Can Take This Off Your Plate
Doing one page yourself is very achievable. Doing it consistently across a hundred pages while running a business is a different matter, and that is where a specialist team pays for itself. AAMAX.CO is a full service digital marketing company providing web development, digital marketing and SEO services worldwide, and page-level optimisation at scale is core to what we do. We audit each page against intent, rewrite metadata and headings, expand thin content, fix technical issues and build the internal links each page needs, then track the outcome page by page. Our SEO services apply this discipline systematically, and because search is increasingly answered by AI systems as well as traditional results, our GEO services make sure your pages are structured to be cited by generative engines too.
Check One: Match the Search Intent Exactly
Search your target query and look at what ranks. If the results are all step-by-step guides and your page is a sales pitch, no amount of tag optimisation will fix the mismatch. Note the dominant format, the depth of the top results and the subtopics that appear on all of them. Your page needs to be the same type of thing, covering at minimum the same ground, plus something the others lack. This single check is more important than every other item on this list, because format mismatch is the most common reason a well-written page never ranks.
Check Two: Rewrite the Title Tag
Put the primary keyword near the beginning, keep the total length short enough that it will not be truncated in results, and include a differentiator that gives someone a reason to choose your listing. Avoid stuffing multiple keywords separated by pipes, which reads as spam and dilutes the message. Then write a meta description of roughly one hundred and fifty characters that restates the value of the page and includes the keyword naturally. The description will not change your ranking, but it will change how many people click, and click-through rate is the difference between a page that gets traffic and one that merely gets impressions.
Check Three: Fix the Heading Structure
Confirm the page has exactly one H1 containing the topic clearly. Then read your H2 headings on their own, ignoring the body text. Do they form a logical outline that answers the question progressively? If they are vague labels rather than informative statements, rewrite them so each one tells the reader precisely what that section delivers. Reserve H3 for real subpoints within a section, and never choose a heading level purely because you like how the font looks.
Check Four: Strengthen the Content Itself
Put the answer to the page's core question in the first paragraph or two. Then work through the subtopics you identified in the intent check and make sure each is genuinely covered, not just mentioned. Add the specifics that generic content omits: real numbers, concrete examples, screenshots of actual processes, edge cases and the follow-up questions a reader will have. Include your keyword and its natural variants where they fit, along with related terminology, because covering the full vocabulary of a topic signals depth far more convincingly than repeating one phrase. Cut any padding that exists only to increase length.
Check Five: Handle Media Properly
Every meaningful image should be compressed, correctly sized for its display dimensions, served in a modern format and given descriptive alt text. Specify width and height so the layout does not shift while loading. Lazy load images below the fold but never the main image at the top of the page, since that usually determines your largest contentful paint. If you embed video, load it so it does not block the rest of the page from rendering.
Check Six: Add and Receive Internal Links
Link from your page to two or three genuinely related pages on your site using descriptive anchor text. Then, more importantly, use a site search to find existing pages that mention this page's topic and add links from them back to your page. Incoming internal links are what tell search engines this page matters within your site, and they are entirely within your control. Also include a small number of outbound links to authoritative sources where they support a specific claim.
Check Seven: Verify the Technical Tags
Confirm the URL slug is short, lowercase, hyphenated and descriptive. Check that the page has a self-referencing canonical tag, is not blocked by robots.txt, carries no noindex directive and appears in your sitemap. Add appropriate structured data for the page type. Set social sharing tags so the page previews correctly when shared. Then load the page on a real mobile device and confirm text is readable without zooming, buttons are easy to tap and nothing overflows the screen.
Check Eight: Review After Sixty Days
Record the page's current impressions, clicks, average position and conversions before you publish your changes, then check the same figures roughly two months later. Rising impressions with a flat click-through rate means the title needs work. Rising clicks with no conversions means the content is not serving commercial intent. No movement at all usually means the intent match is still wrong or the page needs more authority behind it. Use the diagnosis to make one focused round of changes, then move on to your next page and repeat the whole checklist. That loop, applied patiently, is how individual pages become a ranking website.
