How to Do Easy SEO Audit
An SEO Audit Should Produce Decisions, Not Documents
Most SEO audits fail not because the analysis is wrong but because the output is unusable. A hundred-page PDF listing every warning a crawler produced tells you nothing about what to fix first. A useful audit answers three questions: can search engines find and understand my important pages, do those pages deserve to rank for the queries I care about, and which single fix will produce the biggest improvement this month. You can answer all three in an afternoon using mostly free tools, provided you work through the site in a logical order rather than chasing whatever a tool flags loudest.
How AAMAX.CO Turns Audits Into Growth
An audit is only valuable if someone acts on it, which is why our process ends with implementation rather than a report. AAMAX.CO is a full service digital marketing company providing web development, digital marketing and SEO services worldwide, so when our audit uncovers slow templates, thin content or broken internal linking, our own developers and writers fix it. Our search engine optimization team delivers findings as a ranked roadmap with estimated impact and effort for each item, so you always know what is being worked on and why. We also look ahead: our GEO services help make sure your content is structured to be cited by AI-driven answer engines as well as traditional search results. If you want an audit that ends in measurable traffic growth rather than a filing cabinet, we can help.
Step One: Check Indexing First
Nothing else matters if your pages are not in the index. Open Search Console and go to the Pages report under Indexing. Compare the number of indexed pages against the number of pages you believe should be indexed. Then read the exclusion reasons carefully. Excluded by noindex tag, blocked by robots.txt, alternate page with proper canonical, crawled but currently not indexed and discovered but not currently indexed each point to very different problems.
Also check your robots.txt file directly by visiting yourdomain.com/robots.txt, and confirm your sitemap is submitted, being read and free of errors. Use the URL Inspection tool on three or four of your most important pages to confirm Google sees them as you expect.
Step Two: Crawl the Site
Run a crawl with any desktop crawler or free tier crawling tool. You are looking for a specific short list: pages returning 4xx or 5xx status codes, redirect chains and loops, duplicate or missing title tags and meta descriptions, missing H1 headings, orphan pages with no internal links pointing to them, and thin pages with very low word counts.
Pay particular attention to internal linking. Your most valuable commercial pages should receive the most internal links from relevant content. If your crawler shows an important service page with two inbound internal links while a forgotten blog post has forty, you have found an easy improvement.
Step Three: Measure Performance With Real Data
Open the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console, which uses field data from actual visitors rather than a synthetic test. Note which URL groups fail on Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint or Cumulative Layout Shift, then test a representative page from each group in PageSpeed Insights to find the specific cause. The usual culprits are oversized uncompressed images, blocking third-party scripts, fonts loading late, and elements without reserved dimensions causing layout shift.
Step Four: Review On-Page Relevance
Pick your ten most commercially important pages and assess each honestly against the query it targets. Does the title tag lead with the primary keyword and read naturally? Does the H1 match the page's actual subject? Does the content answer the question fully, including the follow-up questions a reader would have? Are there internal links to related pages using descriptive anchor text? Do images have meaningful alt text? Is structured data present where it applies, such as product, FAQ, article or local business schema?
Then search the query yourself and compare your page against the top three results. The gap you see is your work order.
Step Five: Analyse Content Performance
In Search Console, open the Performance report, set the date range to the last sixteen months and compare recent months against the same period a year earlier. Sort pages by decline in clicks to find content that is decaying and needs refreshing. Then filter for queries with high impressions but low click-through rate, which usually means your title and meta description are not compelling enough. Rewriting those is the fastest win available in almost any account.
Step Six: Assess Authority and Local Signals
Use any backlink tool's free tier to check the quality and relevance of your referring domains, and compare your profile against two direct competitors to see which types of sites link to them but not to you. That list becomes your outreach targets.
If you serve customers in a physical location, review your Google Business Profile. Confirm categories, hours, services and description are accurate and complete, that photos are recent, that reviews are being answered, and that your name, address and phone number are identical across every major directory.
Step Seven: Prioritise Ruthlessly
Sort every finding into three buckets. Fix now covers anything blocking indexing or breaking pages, since these carry the highest cost and often the lowest effort. Fix soon covers performance problems, missing metadata, weak internal linking and decaying content. Plan covers content creation, authority building and structural changes. Work strictly from the top and re-audit quarterly.
Keep It Simple and Repeatable
An easy SEO audit is a sequence, not a software purchase: verify indexing, crawl for errors, measure real-world performance, review your key pages against the competition, find decaying content and weak click-through rates, check authority and local signals, then prioritise by impact. Repeat it every quarter and problems never accumulate. If you would like an expert set of eyes on your site, our team is ready to run it with you.
