A technical SEO audit is a systematic inspection of the infrastructure behind your website: how URLs are structured, how quickly pages load, how JavaScript renders, how internal links distribute authority, and how cleanly your site communicates with crawlers. Think of it as a health check. Step 1: Check Crawlability and Indexation
Start with what search engines are actually allowed to see. Open your robots.txt file and confirm you are not blocking CSS, JavaScript, image directories or entire sections by accident. A single misplaced disallow rule can remove thousands of pages from consideration. Next, review your XML sitemap: it should contain only canonical, indexable, 200-status URLs, and it should be referenced in robots.txt and submitted in Google Search Console. Then compare numbers. If your sitemap lists 4,000 URLs but only 900 are indexed, you have an indexation gap worth investigating. The Pages report in Search Console groups excluded URLs by reason — crawled but not indexed, discovered but not crawled, duplicate without canonical, blocked by noindex — and each reason points to a different fix.
Step 2: Run a Full Site Crawl
Use a crawler such as Screaming Frog, Sitebulb or Ahrefs Site Audit to simulate how a bot moves through your site. Configure it to render JavaScript if your site is built on a modern framework, otherwise you will miss content that only appears client-side. From the crawl, extract the essentials: response codes, redirect chains, orphan pages, duplicate titles and meta descriptions, missing H1s, thin pages, and pages buried more than three or four clicks from the homepage. Pay particular attention to redirect chains and loops — every extra hop wastes crawl budget and leaks a little ranking signal. Convert every chain into a single 301 to the final destination.
Step 3: Audit Site Architecture and Internal Linking
A crawl reveals structure, and structure determines how authority flows. Your most commercially important pages should be reachable in the fewest clicks and should receive the most internal links from relevant contextual placements. Look for orphan pages with no internal links at all, and for important pages that only receive links from the footer. Group related content into clear topical clusters, with a hub page linking out to supporting articles and each supporting article linking back. This does two things: it helps crawlers discover new content quickly, and it helps search engines understand which page is the definitive answer for a topic.
Step 4: Measure Page Speed and Core Web Vitals
Speed is both a ranking factor and a conversion factor. Use PageSpeed Insights and the Core Web Vitals report to review Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift, and always trust field data over lab data where both exist. The usual culprits are predictable: oversized uncompressed images, render-blocking scripts, bloated third-party tags, missing caching headers and fonts that load without a fallback. Fixes that consistently pay off include serving images in WebP or AVIF at correct dimensions, lazy-loading below-the-fold media, deferring non-critical JavaScript, reserving space for images and ads to stop layout shift, and putting a CDN in front of static assets.
Step 5: Validate Canonicals, Duplication and Parameters
Duplicate content rarely triggers a penalty, but it does split signals and waste crawl budget. Check that every page has a self-referencing canonical tag, that paginated series are handled consistently, and that faceted navigation or tracking parameters are not generating endless near-identical URLs. Confirm you serve one version of the site only — one protocol, one hostname, one trailing-slash convention — with everything else redirecting. For international sites, verify hreflang tags are reciprocal and reference absolute, indexable URLs.
Step 6: Review Structured Data and Mobile Rendering
Structured data will not magically lift rankings, but it makes your listings richer and more clickable. Validate your Article, Product, FAQ, LocalBusiness or Breadcrumb markup with the Rich Results Test and fix every error and warning that applies to your content type. Then test mobile rendering properly: view your key templates on a real handset, not just a resized browser window. Confirm tap targets are large enough, that content parity exists between mobile and desktop, and that intrusive interstitials are not blocking the main content.

An audit is only valuable when it becomes an action plan. Score each issue by potential impact and implementation effort, then tackle the high-impact, low-effort items first: unblocking indexable pages, fixing broken internal links, compressing images, removing accidental noindex tags. Document a baseline of impressions, clicks, indexed pages and Core Web Vitals before you start, then re-crawl and compare after each release so you can prove which changes moved the needle.
