It loses the instructions it has been giving search engines, which can cause title tags to revert to theme defaults, sitemaps to return 404 errors and social previews to break. Disabling Yoast is easy, but doing it safely requires two extra minutes of preparation.

Step One: Back Up and Export Your Metadata

Take a full backup of your files and database first, using your host's backup tool or a reputable backup plugin. Then export your Yoast data. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Yoast SEO, then Tools, then Import and Export, and use the Export settings option to download your configuration file. This preserves your global settings.

Your per-post titles and descriptions are stored separately as post meta. If you intend to migrate to another plugin, most modern SEO plugins include an importer that reads Yoast's meta fields directly, so run that import before you deactivate anything. If you are simply turning Yoast off, consider exporting your posts with their SEO meta using an export plugin so you have a record.

Step Two: Deactivate the Plugin

Deactivating is reversible and keeps your data in the database. In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins, then Installed Plugins. Find Yoast SEO in the list and click Deactivate beneath its name. The plugin's menu items and editor panels disappear immediately, while your stored metadata remains untouched in the database, ready to reappear if you reactivate.

If your dashboard is inaccessible, you can deactivate through your file manager or FTP client. Navigate to wp-content/plugins and rename the wordpress-seo folder to something like wordpress-seo-disabled. WordPress cannot find the plugin file, so it deactivates automatically. Rename the folder back to restore it.

Step Three: Confirm What Replaced It

After deactivation, immediately check what your site is now outputting. View the page source of your homepage and a couple of important posts and confirm that a title tag and meta description still exist. Check whether your theme or another plugin is generating them, and whether they are sensible. Then verify your sitemap URL. If you were using Yoast's sitemap, that URL will now return a 404, so either enable WordPress core sitemaps, activate a replacement plugin, or submit the new sitemap location in Search Console.

Step Four: Uninstall Only When You Are Certain

Deleting the plugin removes its files and, depending on the version and your settings, may remove its database tables and options. In Plugins, click Delete beneath the deactivated Yoast SEO entry and confirm. Do this only after you have verified that a replacement is handling titles, descriptions, canonicals and sitemaps correctly, because post meta left behind by a deleted plugin is much harder to recover than data you deliberately exported.

Disable Individual Yoast Features Instead

Frequently the goal is not to remove Yoast but to quieten it. Open Yoast SEO, then Settings, and you can switch off specific modules independently. Turn off the readability analysis and SEO analysis if the traffic-light scoring is distracting your writers. Disable the admin bar menu to reclaim space. Disable specific structured data or breadcrumb output if another plugin already provides it. Turn off the sitemap feature if your platform generates one elsewhere. Under Advanced settings you can hide the metabox for particular user roles, which is useful when you want editors to focus on writing rather than optimisation scores.

Migrating to a Different SEO Plugin

If you are moving to an alternative, follow this order: install and activate the new plugin, run its Yoast importer to bring across titles, descriptions, canonicals, robots settings and redirects, configure its global settings to match your previous setup, verify output on a sample of pages including your homepage, a post, a category archive and a product page if you run a store, then deactivate Yoast and check the same pages again. Only delete Yoast once everything reads correctly.

Monitor for Two to Four Weeks

After any SEO plugin change, watch Search Console closely. Check index coverage for new exclusions, watch for a spike in crawl errors, confirm your sitemap is being read, and compare impressions and click-through rate against the previous period. Small fluctuations are normal, but a sudden drop in indexed pages or impressions usually points to a missing canonical, an accidental noindex directive or a broken sitemap.

Do It Deliberately, Not Hastily

Disabling Yoast SEO is a two-click operation, but protecting your rankings around it requires a backup, a metadata export, a confirmed replacement for titles and sitemaps, and a few weeks of monitoring.
