How to Add Yoast SEO Sitemap to Google
Publishing content and hoping search engines find it is a slow strategy. A sitemap shortens that timeline by handing crawlers a complete inventory of the URLs you want indexed, along with when each one last changed. Yoast SEO builds this file for you the moment the plugin is active, which means most WordPress site owners already have a working sitemap they have never looked at. The value only arrives when you verify what it contains, remove what does not belong, and submit it to Google properly. That process takes twenty minutes and it is one of the few SEO tasks with an immediate, measurable effect on how quickly new pages appear in search.
How AAMAX.CO Can Help With Your Technical SEO Setup
We are AAMAX.CO, a full service digital marketing company offering web development, digital marketing, and SEO services worldwide. Sitemap submission is the visible part of a much larger technical layer, and we regularly find that a client's sitemap is submitting hundreds of pages that should never be indexed while omitting the ones that matter. Our specialists audit your index coverage, fix crawl waste, configure your plugin correctly, and monitor Search Console so problems surface before they cost you rankings. If you want that handled properly, our SEO services include full technical audits and ongoing index management.
Finding Your Yoast Sitemap URL
Yoast serves its sitemap index at yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml. Open that URL in a browser. You should see a styled index listing several child sitemaps, typically one for posts, one for pages, one for each custom post type, and separate files for categories, tags, and author archives. Yoast splits large sites automatically, so a big blog may show multiple numbered post sitemaps.
If the URL returns a 404, three things are usually responsible. The XML sitemap feature may be switched off in the plugin's site features panel, so check there first. Your permalink structure may need flushing, which you can do by saving the permalinks settings page without changing anything. Or another SEO plugin may be running simultaneously and intercepting the sitemap route, in which case deactivate the duplicate plugin entirely rather than trying to run both.
Cleaning Up What the Sitemap Contains
A sitemap is a recommendation list, not a dump of every URL on your site. Including pages you do not want ranked wastes crawl budget and invites thin content assessments. Open each child sitemap and read it critically.
Tag archives are the usual offender. Sites that have accumulated hundreds of single use tags end up with hundreds of near empty archive pages in the sitemap. Unless your tag pages genuinely serve as useful topic hubs with substantial content, exclude them. The same applies to author archives on single author sites, date based archives, media attachment pages, and any custom post type that exists for internal structure rather than public reading.
Yoast controls all of this through its search appearance settings. Setting a content type or taxonomy to be excluded from search results removes it from the sitemap and adds a noindex directive at the same time, which is the consistent pairing you want. Never leave a URL in your sitemap while it carries a noindex tag; that contradiction generates errors in Search Console and confuses crawl prioritisation.
Submitting the Sitemap in Search Console
You need a verified property before you can submit anything. In Search Console, add your site as a domain property if you can edit DNS records, since that covers every subdomain and both protocols in one entry. If DNS access is not available, use a URL prefix property and verify with the HTML tag method, which Yoast supports through its webmaster tools settings field.
Once verified, open the Sitemaps report from the left navigation, enter sitemap_index.xml in the field, and submit. Submit only the index file. Google will follow it to every child sitemap automatically, and submitting each child separately clutters the report without adding value.
Status will read "Couldn't fetch" briefly while processing. Refresh after a few minutes. A successful submission shows "Success" along with the number of discovered URLs. If it stays on couldn't fetch for more than a day, confirm the file loads for an anonymous visitor, check that robots.txt is not blocking it, and verify no security plugin or firewall is refusing requests from Google's crawler.
Reading the Reports That Follow
Submission is the beginning of the useful information, not the end of the task. The Pages report under Indexing shows how many submitted URLs are indexed and, more importantly, why the rest are not. Learn to distinguish the common statuses. "Crawled, currently not indexed" usually signals quality or duplication concerns rather than a technical fault. "Discovered, currently not indexed" points to crawl budget or server responsiveness. "Excluded by noindex tag" means you have a contradiction between your sitemap and your page directives that needs resolving.
Do not request indexing for every URL individually. That tool exists for urgent single page situations, and heavy use provides no advantage. A correct sitemap, good internal linking, and regular publishing achieve far more than manual submission ever will.
Keeping It Healthy Over Time
Yoast regenerates the sitemap automatically whenever you publish, update, or delete content, so you do not resubmit after every change. What you do need is a periodic review. Every quarter, open the sitemap index, confirm the URL counts look plausible, and check that no new post type or taxonomy has appeared uninvited after a plugin installation. Ecommerce plugins in particular add product attribute taxonomies that generate large numbers of low value archive URLs.
Also confirm that your robots.txt file references the sitemap location. It is a small addition that helps crawlers other than Google discover your inventory without manual submission on every platform.
A well maintained sitemap accelerates discovery, but it cannot make weak pages rank. It works alongside site speed, internal linking, and content quality as part of one system. Our digital marketing team treats it that way, and our GEO services apply the same discipline to visibility inside AI answer engines, which depend on clean, crawlable inventories just as traditional search does.
