Step One: Choose Your Canonical Hostname
Before you touch a configuration file, decide which version becomes your permanent home. Check three things. First, look in Google Search Console or your analytics platform to see which hostname already receives the majority of impressions and clicks. Second, run a backlink report and see which version has attracted more referring domains. Third, consider technical constraints: if you plan to use a CNAME record pointing to a CDN or hosted platform, some DNS providers handle that more gracefully on a www subdomain than on the bare apex domain. Choosing the hostname that already carries the most authority and links minimises the amount of equity that has to travel through redirects.
Step Two: Implement 301 Redirects at the Server Level
Always use a 301 permanent redirect rather than a 302 temporary one. Redirects do the heavy lifting, but they should not be your only signal. Update self-referencing canonical tags on every page to point at the canonical hostname. Regenerate your XML sitemap so it lists only canonical URLs, then resubmit it. Rewrite internal links, navigation, footers and hard-coded asset paths so they reference the chosen host directly instead of relying on a redirect. Update structured data, hreflang annotations, Open Graph URLs, RSS feeds and your robots.txt sitemap reference. Finally, adjust analytics configuration, advertising destination URLs and any email or affiliate links you control.
Step Five: Verify, Monitor and Reach Out
Add both hostnames as properties in Google Search Console so you can watch traffic shift from one to the other. Crawl your site with a technical SEO tool and filter for anything that still returns a 3xx status when linked internally. Watch the Pages report for a rise in the "Page with redirect" category on the old host — that is expected and healthy. Keep an eye on log files to confirm bots are steadily reducing requests to the deprecated hostname.
For your most valuable backlinks, it is worth contacting the referring site and asking them to update the URL directly. Redirects pass the overwhelming majority of authority, but a direct link is always cleaner. And critically, leave the redirects in place permanently. Removing them a year later will resurrect every duplication problem you just solved.
